Step 1: Visit the New Jersey Consumer Affairs Division website here.
Step 2: Choose to apply for an apprentice license, a master plumber’s license or journeyman license. Other plumbing specialties are available on that page.
If you have not yet completed a state-certified apprenticeship or have earned a degree in plumbing, sanitary or mechanical engineering, then you may have to apply for your apprenticeship.
If you have completed your apprenticeship in New Jersey or another state, but have not yet completed one year of board-approved work experience, then you must apply to be a journeyman. There are fewer restrictions applicable to journeymen than to expert plumbers, as most journeymen are acquiring the experience for becoming a master plumber.
If you have completed an apprenticeship and work, usually for a total of 5 years or more, then you must apply to become a master plumber. The application of master plumbing involves taking 3 plumbing exams.
Step 3: Print the application and verify the qualifications. Make sure you are authorized according to the following rules:
