How to Become an HVAC Tech in Missouri

If you’re considering a move into the heating, ventilation, and air conditioning (HVAC) world of Missouri, you’ll be able to enjoy the Gateway Arch, ragtime music, and a cost of living that is almost 15% lower than the national average. 

While HVAC techs don’t need a state license, we’ll explain below how to get trained and meet any local requirements for completing HVAC work.

Do You Need an HVAC Tech Certification in Missouri?

There are no state requirements for HVAC techs in Missouri but, technicians are required to apply for certain licenses and certifications based on their local licensing boards. 

There are also 3 types of state licenses offered based on years of experience: HVAC contractor, HVAC journeyman contractor, and EPA HVAC contractor. 

Requirements for HVAC Techs

To start your HVAV journey, you must be at least 18 years old and have a high school diploma or GED equivalent.

You’ll also need proper training by attending a technical or community college, going to a trade school, or enrolling in an official apprenticeship program. 

After training, you will need to check the local licensing requirements for the area you’d like to work in. You can do this by calling your licensing office or searching on your city’s official website.

HVAC Techs in Saint Louis, MO

To be an HVAC journeyman in Saint Louis, you need to complete a 4-year apprenticeship of 7,500 hours of combined job and classroom experience or 7,500 hours of documented work experience. You’ll then need to pass a county-mandated exam.

You must print out the application and deliver it to 41 South Central Avenue 6th floor. You will also need to submit a $45 check to the St. Louis County Treasurer. 

Becoming an HVAC Contractor in Missouri

To become an MO HVAC contractor, you must:

  • Have at least 2 years of experience
  • Complete the approved training
  • Pass the HVAC contractor certification exam
  • Have liability insurance of at least $500,000
  • Have a surety bond of at least $10,000

You can then register for one of the 3 types of licenses: service-installer, sheet metal, or pipe fitter. There are also additional requirements and fees per municipality. 

HVAC Contractors in Kansas City, MO

Contractors in Kansas City must apply for either the contractor professional license or business contractor license through the Kansas City website

First, register with a username and password to create an account using the links above. Then, look for the “apply” icon. You will have to complete the application and attach relevant documents, such as exam scores. 

Once approved, you will be prompted to pay fees. Afterward, you will receive your license electronically. 

HVAC Contractors in Springfield, MO

In Springfield, you must complete an application and have previous employers fill out additional experience forms. All forms must be original copies and notarized. 

Deliver the application to Building Development Services on the Friday before their next meeting. Meetings are on the first Thursday of every month in the Busch Building at 5:30 pm. 

You will be notified once your application is approved, and you’ll have a year to complete the Prometric or ICC test. You must have a score of 75% or higher to get your certification. The testing fee is $110 and certification card fees range from $25-$50.
