Do You Need an HVAC License in Georgia?
Georgia does not require a license for HVAC techs.
HVAC contractors, on the other hand, do need a state license. If you plan to own your own HVAC company or supervise other HVAC techs, you will need this license.

Becoming an HVAC Tech in Georgia
Formal training is the best way to become competent and marketable in the Georgian HVAC field. You can learn in a classroom, in the field, or through a combination of both.
Some HVAC certificate programs can last just a few months, others lead to an Associate’s degree, and newer courses are even given online.
Alternatively, you may want to complete an HVAC apprenticeship. This combines classroom hours with hands-on learning that is often paid. Becoming an HVAC Contractor in Georgia
HVAC technicians who want to grow their salary and start an HVAC business can become HVAC contractors. These contractors must be licensed by the GA State Board of Conditioned Air Contractors.
Georgia calls HVAC contractors conditioned air contractors. They are those in charge of installing, altering, and repairing air-conditioning and heating systems within public or private premises.

- Restricted licenses are for only working on systems not exceeding 175,000 BTU of heating and 60,000 of cooling
- Non-restricted licenses can work on any type of HVAC unit
You will apply for your license through examination. Once your application is approved, you’ll take the official exam. If you pass the exam, you’ll receive your license.
Requirements
Before applying for your license, you’ll need to:
- Have your EPA certification
- Have a Manual J&D certification
- Be a citizen or legal resident
- Complete the education requirements listed on page 1 of the application
