Heating, ventilation, and air conditioning (HVAC) technicians work with different climate control systems and equipment. Those working in Kansas are not monitored at the state level but must adhere to their city’s HVAC licensing regulations.
To give you an idea of how to become an HVAC tech in Kansas, we’ve looked at the procedures in the three largest KS cities: Wichita, Overland Park, and Kansas City.
HVAC Technicians in Wichita
Wichita is located in Sedgwick County and follows county codes for HVAC work. HVAC licenses are given under the title of “mechanical licenses” in the county. You can also get an HVAC Contractor License in Wichita.
HVAC Mechanical Licenses
HVAC techs in Wichita will need to apply for their journeyman trade certificate. There is also a master-level certificate.
HVAC techs will likely choose from the following trades:
- Mechanical (general HVAC)
- Refrigeration
- Sheet metal
You’ll need to complete the application and pay a $35 certificate fee.
HVAC Contractor Licenses
HVAC contractors who want to be in charge of their HVAC projects and hire other employees must have a trade contractor license.
First, you will need to either be or employ a qualified party who is a master-level HVAC technician with the corresponding trade certification from Wichita. The qualified person must take and pass the Kansas Standard ICC Exam.
Next, you should have a registered business with a certificate of good standing, hold liability insurance, Worker’s Comp, and car insurance, and complete all forms listed here.
Once the exam is passed, you can complete the application. Tick off your specialty: mechanical, water conditioner, gas-fitter, refrigeration, or sheet metal work. Be sure to pay the $360 (per license) fee.
HVAC Technicians in Overland Park
HVAC technicians in Overland Park do not need to be licensed. Instead, they should work under a licensed HVAC contractor and adhere to all local codes and regulations.
HVAC Contractor Licenses
Overland Park contractor licenses for HVAC work are called Class DM licenses. These include HVAC, mechanical, and refrigeration services.
To get this license, you’ll need to complete the application, have general liability and Worker’s Compensation insurance, establish a qualifying individual, and have a business that is in good standing with the Secretary of State.
The qualifying individual can be the contractor or their employee. They must meet ONE of the following requirements:
- Have a Bachelor’s degree in architecture, engineering, construction science, or construction management from an accredited program
- Score 75% or higher on the standard master exam for their trade (HVAC)
More information on this process can be found on the application.
HVAC Technicians in Kansas City
HVAC techs in Kansas City can aim to get their master-level trade license. If you do not have your master trade license, you may be able to work under a licensed master HVAC tech.
To become a master HVAC tech yourself, you’ll need to apply for Prometric Master Testing at the mechanical level and list all of your work experience.
Once approved, you’ll be able to take the master mechanical exam. If you pass, you can get your trade license for Wyandotte County and Kansas City.
