Introduction to welding and more (1 day) session

In this course, students will learn to fuse different types of metals. Welding and cutting processes will be implemented in a real-world shop setting utilizing state-of-the-art welding equipment, as well as computer numerical control (CNC) plasma cutting equipment.

Lincoln Tech offers three different welding programs, two of which have additional training in either pipefitting or metal fabrication. While the three programs differ slightly in specialized material, they all feature the three most-used welding processes utilized in the majority of applications in the industry; Shielded Metal Arc Welding (SMAW), MIG (Metal, Inert Gas) or GMAW (Gas, Metal Arc Welding), and TIG (Tungsten Inert Gas) welding. The programs also include Flux Core Arc Welding (FCAW), a method for specific applications the graduate might encounter in the field.

Every Lincoln Tech welding instructor is an experienced and certified welder with a minimum of five years of full-time industry experience, of which three years must have been spent using the welding types offered within the two welding programs. Instructors must also have earned their American Welding Society (AWS) certification, and must hold any additional valid licenses and certifications as specified by the State in which they teach.

Session I -Content focuses on welding safety, oxyfuel cutting, base metal preparation, and weld quality. In addition students will learn SMAW equipment and setup, SMAW electrodes and selection, SMAW beads and fillet welds, SMAW groove welds with backing and SMAW open v-groove welds. After successful completion of Session I, you have the opportunity to earn NCCER Level I certification.

Advanced Manufacturing and Engineering (AME) Academy

Advanced Manufacturing and Engineering Academy students are exposed to Precision Machining, Computer-Aided Design, and Welding Technologies, experiencing the interaction of multiple technologies in a real manufacturing environment and through field trips to local industries. In the second year, students select an area of concentration in either Engineering, Precision Machining, or Welding Technologies.


Over the two-year program, students will follow approved industry methods and engineering standards while learning to fabricate industry-specific metal products. Students learn to make components from blueprint to completion. Following the design phase, students utilize lathes, surface grinders, drill presses, and power saws. Upon successful completion of the program, students can earn Machining Level I certification. In addition, students learn how to weld using the four different welding processes. Welding Course Offerings

Welding Introduction
Follow a series of processes that will take you through Oxyacetylene welding and cutting, equipment set-up, shielded metal arc (stick), metal inert gas (MIG), tungsten inert gas (TIG), single and multiple pass welding in all positions. Curriculum follows the guidelines of the American Society of Welding. Auto-darkening hood will be available Student supplies gloves and light welding jacket.
Learn to weld sheet metal and thicker types of materials incorporating different joint designs using the gas metal arc welding process. Students will also learn to weld carbon steel material utilizing the Fluxcore Welding process. Students will learn the differences between gas and metal arc and Fluxcore Welding, the operation and settings of these power supplies. Lectures will incorporate joint designs and when to use these processes. Students are welcome to bring in their own projects. Auto-darkening hood will be available. Student supplies gloves and light welding jacket.
Welding TIG
Learn to weld carbon steel, stainless steel and aluminum in flat, vertical and horizontal positions using gas tungsten arc welding process. Students will learn the proper operation of the power supply and torch handle. Students are encouraged to bring in their own projects. Curriculum follows the guidelines of the American Welding Society. Auto-darkening hood will be available. Student supplies gloves and light welding jacket.
Shielded metal arc welding (SMAW), flux shielded arc welding or informally known as stick welding, is a manual arc welding process that uses a consumable electrode covered with a flux to lay the weld. In this course you will expand on techniques such as vertical up and down, practice on overhead and be introduced to hard facing as used on much construction equipment.

The high-tech Welding Technology program focuses on welding processes performed in all positions on both plate and pipe.
You will learn proper safety methods, required math, related skills, layout and fit-up, welding codes and standards, welding inspection, testing, and drawing/welding symbol interpretation.
The first year, students will complete AWS Level I standards for an entry-level welder.
The second-year will take students toward AWS Levels II and III—advanced welder and expert welder. Additional techniques, such as high-pressure vessel, high-pressure pipe, and ship fitting will be taught, as well as other advanced welding techniques.
The welding technology program is taught according to the standards set by the American Welders Society (AWS) and is AWS-certified.
