How do you obtain a plumbing license in Idaho? If you have have plumbing experience you can apply and take a test to obtain a journeyman or plumbing contractor license. If you do not have plumbing experience you will need to obtain a plumbing apprentice work registration.
In order to qualify for the Plumbing Apprentice registration an applicant must:
• Be a minimum of 16 years of age.
• Submit a completed notarized application (included).
• Pay the $50 (non-refundable) license registration fee.
A person wishing to become a plumbing apprentice shall register with the Division of Building Safety prior to going to work. All apprentices shall pay the registration fee as prescribed by Section 54-2614, Idaho Code. The minimum age for any apprentice shall be sixteen (16) years. No examination is required for such registration. In order to maintain registration, the apprentice shall renew his registration in accordance with Sections 54-2614 and 54-2614A, Idaho Code. Work Requirements
A plumbing apprentice must work at the trade under the constant on-the-job supervision of a journeyman and in the employ of a contractor for a total of four (4) years, defined as a minimum of eight thousand (8,000) hours work experience in order to be eligible for a journeyman certificate of competency. Schooling Requirements
A plumbing apprentice must complete an Idaho Plumbing Board approved related course of instruction for four (4) years in order to be eligible for a journeyman certificate of competency. Unless prior approval has been granted by the Division of Building Safety, the apprentice must complete the required course work sequentially: year one (1) must be completed prior to beginning year two (2); year two (2) must be completed prior to beginning year three (3); and year three (3) must be completed prior to beginning year four (4).
A minimum of one hundred forty-four (144) hours of classroom or other Idaho Plumbing Board-approved instruction time per school year is required. A grade average of seventy percent (70%) must be attained in these courses.
Upon completion of apprenticeship schooling, the apprentice must obtain a certificate of completion, or a letter signed by the chairman of his apprenticeship committee and attach the certificate or letter to his application for a journeyman license. (3-29-12)

What are the requirements to get a Plumbing Journeyman and Contractors License?
1) Applicant performed plumbing work in Idaho – these will be most of our applicants who have worked as apprentices and as a journeyman in Idaho.
– Must qualify for journeyman license by completing apprenticeship requirements – (4) years of schooling; 8000 hours supervised work experience; successful completion of written and practical journeyman exam
– Must have their journeyman license at time of application for contractor
– Must have worked as a journeyman for 2 ½ years in Idaho to apply for contractor
– Must apply, pay the fees, take the Idaho contractor’s examination. Proof of bond will only be required upon successful completion of exam
2) Applicant performed journeyman work Out of State (OOS) – from a Licensing Jurisdiction (one that licenses plumbers)
– Such applicants for Idaho contractor’s must first obtain an Idaho journeyman license in order to apply
– Applicant for Idaho journeyman license must show proof of licensure as a journeyman from another licensing (recognized) jurisdiction
– Apply, pay fees, pass the Idaho Journeyman exam
– To apply for Idaho Contractor license – applicant must demonstrate (2 ½) years experience working as licensed journeyman plumber – either in Idaho or OOS, or proof of holding a master license in another recognized jurisdiction (for any duration).
– Apply, pay fees, pass the Idaho contractor exam. Proof of bond will only be required upon successful completion of exam
3) Applicant performed journeyman work Out of State (OOS) – from a Non-Licensing Jurisdiction
– Such applicants for Idaho contractor’s must first obtain an Idaho journeyman license in order to apply
– Applicant for Idaho journeyman license must show (4) years experience working as an apprentice (or journeyman) OOS, and (4) years of schooling
– Apply, pay fees, pass the Idaho Journeyman exam
– Such applicant for Idaho Contractor license must demonstrate an additional (4) years experience working as licensed journeyman plumber OOS (additional to the (4) qualifying years equivalent to apprenticeship). So, (8) years total to qualify to take contractor exam.
o (4) additional years may be demonstrated by submittal of affidavits from (3) sworn individuals attesting to the fact that the applicant has performed plumbing work that would require a journeyman license if performed in Idaho.
o Or perform as a journeyman in Idaho for 2 ½ years
– Apply, pay fees, pass the Idaho contractor exam. Proof of bond will only be required upon successful completion of exam
