Work as a Plumber in North Dakota – How to apply for and obtain a Plumbing License

If you want to work as a plumber in North Dakota, you can apply for either a Journeyman or Master Plumber license, or you can apply for an Apprentice Plumber License by filling out an application with the North Dakota State Plumbing Board and if you meet the qualifications you will need to take an exam.

How much does it cost to obtain a plumbing license in North Dakota?

If you are applying for a Master Plumber License, there is a $35 application and exam fee.  If you pass, there is a $165 license fee.

If you are applying for a Journeyman Plumber License, there is a $25 application and exam fee.  If you pass, there is a $75 license fee.

What are the requirements for applying?

If you are applying for a Journeyman License, you must have four years and 7,600 hours of experience as an apprentice plumber for a licensed Master Plumber.

If you are applying for a Master Plumber License, you must be at least 21 years of age and have had two years and 3,400 hours of experience as a licensed Journeyman Plumber.

What if I have a plumbing license from another state?

If you are licensed in another state, you will need to submit proof of the license issued by the other state.  Please submit a letter from the issuing or licensing board board/agency.  The letter needs to state the type of license held, the date of issuance, whether or not the license was obtained by examination; the requirements for obtaining licensure; and the expiration date of the license.  A copy of the license should also be submited.

What are the requirements for applying for Apprentice Plumber License?

You will need to be at least 18 years of age in order to apply for an Apprentice License.  Applicants who are graduates of courses in plumbing at an accredited school may be granted hourly credit toward the term of apprenticeship when an official copy of the school trnscript is provided.

Applicants who are registered in other states must verify proof of previous practical experience by a state endorsed letter.

What is the cost of an Apprentice Plumber License?

The cost of the license for the first year, and from 0-1900 hours is $20 for the months of Jan-Mar, $15 for the months of Apr-Jun, $10 for the months of Jul-Sep, and $5 for the months of Oct-Dec.

The cost of the license in the second year, from 1901 to 3800 hours is $30.  The cost of the license in the third year, from 3801-5700 hours is $40.  The cost of the license in the fourth year, from 5701-7600 hours is $50. In the fifth year, for more than 7600 hours, the cost is $75.
